What We Think
Caring breeders of quality dogs develop a philosophy that defines the objectives
of their breeding program. It is important to define what those
objectives are as they guide the decisions that are made concerning management
of the kennel line.
Pacific Crest Kennel's basic philosophy is to breed Golden Retrievers that
conform to the breed standard, that exhibit the natural born traits that define
a working retriever (birdiness, biddability), that are free of genetic flaws,
and that have the wonderful temperament that have made these dogs a favorite
worldwide.
Traits of a Pacific Crest Golden Retriever
Pacific Crest Goldens kennel philosophy is to be true to the purpose for which
the breed was developed. Our breeding programs are designed to produce
dogs that can be used in the field for waterfowl and upland game hunting.
We hunt our dogs, and work to develop a bloodline that exhibits "birdiness"
along with the ability to work with and socialize with other dogs.
Temperament and obedience are also a focus of our breeding program. All of
our breeding stock is worked in the obedience ring, and we have a policy
of only breeding dogs that have an obedience title.
Nature Versus Nurture
Breeding is not an exact science, and dogs, much like people, are products of
their breeding and their background. Even a well bred and socialized
Golden Retriever can exhibit health and temperament problems if put in an
environment that is stressful or unhealthy. Because of this, Pacific
Crest Goldens is very selective in the placement of its puppies.
We hope to place all of our puppies in homes with owners that share the Pacific
Crest Goldens philosophy. We encourage our customers to read and adopt
The Monks of New Skete method of rearing a puppy related in their excellent
book "The Art of Raising a Puppy." We give a copy of this book to each
adoptee of a Pacific Crest Kennel puppy.
We take an active support role with our puppy owners, and encourage puppy owners
to call us with questions or comments. We want to keep in touch, and hope
that owners will keep us informed of the events in their lives regarding their
Pacific Crest Goldens puppy.
